They will fear you and flee you and call you a monster. The national bestselling author of A Thousand Ships and Pandora's Jar returns with a fresh and stunningly perceptive take on the story of Medusa, the original monstered woman. She succeeds in breathing warm life into some of our oldest stories.”- Telegraph (UK) Longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2023 Rise by karina bliss6/12/2023 The art and literary world of her day was like the French court of the 18th century: she was writing to a set of known persons. But Kathy Acker had something no longer possible: a chamber audience. People are inclined to adopt these forms. With the proliferation of indie presses, “now is as good a time as any in writing,” Kraus tells me. You could even argue that I Love Dick, which often slips into art criticism and political commentary, also opened the way for “autotheory” - e.g., the bio-based lyric essays of Maggie Nelson. Kraus was also among the first to consciously codify this non-genre when she detonated I Love Dick (Semiotext(e), 1997), her novel that plays with the “I” in supremely unsettling bursts. Today, its giddy, free-range, punk-rock, first-person spews and cut-ups (spatula’d together equally from porno and the literary canon) liberate quasi-multitudes. When it ignited in the late 1970s, Acker’s work had no specific classification. “I always hated the term,” Kraus tells me. The co-publisher and editor (with Hedi El Kholti and the late Sylvère Lotringer) of Semiotext(e) has brought decades of character-narrative to light, including the early work of autofiction pioneer Kathy Acker. More specifically, defined as a form of literature in which a first-person narrator may or may not represent the author, autofiction excludes next to nothing but genre fiction - e.g., crime stories, fantasy. The road to wigan pier book6/12/2023 He was commisioned by an organisation called the Left Book Club to carry out a report on the living conditions of the unemployed in England’s industrial North. The Road To Wigan Pier continues in this vein, but was written several years later after Orwell had established himself as a writer and distilled his outrage into a coherent socialist philosophy. He ended up spending much time amongst the working class, and the result of that was his excellent book Down And Out In Paris And London, which I read last year and greatly enjoyed. I wanted to submerge myself, to get right down among the oppressed, to be one of them and on their side against the tyrants.” He decided he wanted “to escape not merely from imperialism but from every form of man’s dominion over man. The Nature Fix by Florence Williams6/11/2023 As our modern lives shift dramatically indoors, these ideas–and the answers they yield–are more urgent than ever. Delving into completely new research, she uncovers the powers of the natural world to improve health, promote reflection and innovation, and ultimately strengthen our relationships. From forest trails in Korea, to islands in Finland, to groves of eucalyptus in California, Williams investigates the science at the confluence of environment, mood, health, and creativity. Intrigued by our storied renewal in the natural world, Florence Williams sets out to uncover the science behind nature’s positive effects on the brain. For centuries, poets and philosophers extolled the benefits of a walk in the woods: Beethoven drew inspiration from rocks and trees Wordsworth composed while tromping over the heath Nikola Tesla conceived the electric motor while visiting a park. Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Best Science and Technology (2017) An intrepid investigation into nature’s restorative benefits by a prize-winning author. Brief Summary of Book: The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative by Florence Williams The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge6/11/2023 Their only chance at surviving the change is if Arienrhod, the ageless, corrupt Snow Queen, can destroy destiny with an act of genocide. But soon the galactic stargate will close, isolating Tiamat, and the 150-year reign of the Summer primitives will begin. The imperious Winter colonists have ruled the planet Tiamat for 150 years, deriving wealth from the slaughter of the sea mers. Which is probably why it took me two months to finish the thing…įirst line: Here on Tiamat, where there is more water than land, the sharp edge between ocean and sky is blurred the two merge into one. And it was enjoyable to some degree but it just never really grabbed me. As a sort of retelling of The Snow Queen (the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen) and a Hugo and Nebula Award winner, I thought this would be just my jam. This book took me way longer to read than expected. Stephen king night shift collection6/11/2023 Glenn Chadbourne, Mark Stutzman, Chris Odgers (illustrator). Cora reilly mafia6/10/2023 i feel like her not being able to tell what really happened doesn’t give closure to the others / let them move on. cleaning remo’s name aside, elaborating things would give her family members at least 10% peace of mind. if she got to explain what really happened, imagine how much fake torture would disappear from their minds. they really won’t understand because she never got to explain in detail in the first place. but she couldn’t have know that because again, she never got to explain in detail why or how it is that she wasn’t abused. I'm a lover of good food, wine and books, and I'm hopelessly addicted to bad boys (in books). at least i think because there was no other mention that she tried again, only her thoughts repeatedly saying that they wont understand, which is totally likely bc of their pride and stuff. I can’t remember exactly but i think every time (it was only twice if im not wrong?) she tries to explain, she gets interrupted before she gets to say anything beyond ‘it wasn’t like that’ or ‘i wasn’t r****d’. Yeah i know she did explain that’s why i said ‘try hard enough’. |
